Your HRV does not just measure how well you recover from exercise. It is a window into your autonomic nervous system, the part of your biology that governs how your body responds to every form of demand, physical and psychological. When that system is under load, your HRV reflects it. When it is recovering, your HRV reflects that too.

The two sides of your nervous system

Your autonomic nervous system has two branches that work in opposition to each other. The sympathetic branch is your accelerator. It activates during physical or psychological stress, speeds up your heart rate, and prepares your body to respond to a threat. When it is dominant, the intervals between your heartbeats become more uniform. Your HRV drops. The parasympathetic branch is your brake. It activates during rest and recovery, slows your heart rate, and allows your body to repair itself. When it is dominant, the intervals between your heartbeats become more varied. Your HRV rises. Most of the time both branches are active at once, and your HRV reflects the balance between them at any given moment. A high HRV suggests your parasympathetic system is leading. A low HRV suggests your sympathetic system is working harder than usual.

The vagus nerve

The vagus nerve is the main pathway of the parasympathetic system. It runs from your brainstem down through your neck, chest and abdomen, connecting your brain to your heart, lungs and digestive organs. When the vagus nerve is active, your heart rate slows and your HRV rises. People with stronger vagal activity tend to have higher HRV at rest and recover more quickly from stressors of all kinds. Vagal tone responds to behaviour. Slow, controlled breathing with a longer exhale than inhale directly activates the vagus nerve. So does regular aerobic exercise, adequate sleep, and cold water exposure. Each of these tends to appear over time as a gradual rise in resting HRV readings.

What HRV actually measures about stress

The important thing about HRV as a stress indicator is that it responds to all stressors, not just physical ones. Your nervous system does not distinguish between the load of a hard training session and the load of a high-pressure week at work. Both activate the sympathetic branch. Both show up as reduced HRV. This is what makes HRV tracking useful beyond athletic recovery. A run of nights with poor sleep, a prolonged period of high workload, or a difficult personal situation all create cumulative load that shows up in the data even when you have not trained hard. If your HRV is trending down over several days and nothing has changed in your training, the most likely explanation is non-physical stress. The data gives you a concrete signal for something that is otherwise easy to dismiss or overlook.

How the band tracks your stress response

Alongside the four-band HRV display, the HLTH Band shows a separate stress indicator derived from HRV patterns and heart rate. It displays in four levels. Relaxed reflects strong parasympathetic activity and low autonomic load. Normal reflects balanced activity between both branches. Medium reflects elevated sympathetic activity. High reflects strong sympathetic dominance and high autonomic load. This indicator does not detect stress directly. It measures HRV patterns that correlate with the autonomic stress response. The distinction matters: the band reads your nervous system’s activity, it does not interpret your emotional state. The stress indicator is most useful when read alongside your HRV band score. A day where your HRV sits in the Low band and the stress indicator reads High is a clearer signal than either reading on its own.

Using HRV as a recovery readiness guide

When to ease off. Your HRV band score is Low, your stress indicator has shown Medium or High for two or more days, and you have no clear physical reason for the drop. Those signals together suggest accumulated load on your nervous system. A lighter day, more sleep, or deliberate rest is likely to produce more benefit than pushing through. When to push harder. Your HRV band score is Good or Excellent, your stress indicator is showing Relaxed or Normal, and you have had several nights of solid sleep. Those conditions suggest your nervous system has capacity. It is a reasonable window for higher training intensity, demanding cognitive work, or anything else that requires you to operate at full output.

One good morning is not a green light

A single strong HRV reading is not permission for everything. HRV fluctuates day to day. What you are looking for is a sustained pattern of two to four days of strong readings, not one good morning.
