Your resting heart rate is how fast your heart beats when you are sitting still and not physically active. It is one of the simplest and most informative numbers your body produces. A lower resting heart rate generally reflects a stronger, more efficient cardiovascular system. A consistently higher one can signal that your heart is working harder than it needs to.

What resting heart rate is
Every heartbeat pumps blood through your body. Your resting heart rate, or RHR, is the number of beats per minute when your body is at rest and not under physical demand. At rest, cardiovascular demand is low, and a heart that can meet that demand with fewer beats per minute has more reserve capacity for when demands increase. RHR is a useful long-term health marker. A consistently elevated resting heart rate is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and a consistently low RHR in healthy adults tends to reflect good cardiovascular fitness.
How to measure your RHR
The most accurate manual method is to measure in the morning before getting out of bed. Place two fingers on the inside of your wrist below the thumb and count beats for 60 seconds. For a quicker check, count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Wrist wearables using optical PPG sensors measure heart rate continuously throughout the day and night. RHR is then calculated from the periods when your body is at rest, which produces a more consistent reading than a single spot check.

What affects your resting heart rate
Aerobic fitness lowers RHR significantly over time. Poor or short sleep raises it the following day. Caffeine raises it temporarily. Alcohol raises both overnight and morning readings. Dehydration raises it. Stress and anxiety raise it through sympathetic activation. Illness or fever raises it. And certain medications raise or lower it depending on the type. Of these, aerobic fitness has the largest sustained effect. The heart adapts to regular training by becoming more efficient, which gradually lowers the resting rate over weeks and months.
When to speak to a doctor
An RHR consistently above 100 bpm at rest is worth discussing with your doctor, particularly if it persists over several days without a clear cause such as illness, dehydration or high stress. An RHR below 60 bpm is common in fit individuals and is not a concern on its own. If it is accompanied by dizziness, unusual fatigue or fainting, raise it with your doctor.

How to improve your resting heart rate
Regular aerobic exercise is the most effective approach. Walking, running, cycling and swimming all produce measurable improvements over time, typically after four to eight weeks of consistent activity. Beyond exercise, the day-to-day factors that raise RHR are also the ones to address. Improving sleep quality, reducing caffeine intake, staying well hydrated and managing stress all contribute. None produces dramatic results in isolation, but several combined make a meaningful difference over months.
