Skin Irritation From Wearing the Band
Skin irritation from wearables is fairly common and is usually easy to fix. Here's what can cause it and what to do.
Common Causes
- Sweat, bacteria and moisture building up under the band
- Soap, lotion or shampoo getting trapped under the band
- Wearing the band too tightly for long periods
- Not giving your skin a break
- Sensitivity to a strap material
How to Fix It
1. Wash your band regularly
Sweat and bacteria build up with everyday wear, and this is one of the most common causes of itching. To clean your band:
- Take the sensor out of the strap
- Wash the strap in warm, soapy water
- Rinse it well and let it dry completely before wearing
- Wipe the sensor with a soft, damp cloth
Do this every week or two, or more often if you exercise a lot. Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents and rough cloths.
2. Keep your wrist clean and dry
Wash and dry your wrist regularly, especially after workouts. If you shower with your band on, rinse away any soap or shampoo under the band and dry your wrist well.
3. Don't wear it too tightly
Your band should be snug enough to keep the sensor against your skin, but not so tight that it leaves marks or feels uncomfortable. If you see red marks or indentations, loosen the strap slightly.
4. Give your skin a break
If your skin feels irritated, take your band off for a while each day to let your wrist air out.
5. Try the other strap
Your HLTH Band comes with two straps: the Stretch Knit Band and the Active Band (silicone). If one irritates your skin, try the other one.
6. Adjust the position slightly
Moving the band a little up or down your wrist can help avoid pressure on the same spot. Try to keep it about one finger-width above your wrist bone, so your readings stay accurate.
When to Stop Wearing It
Take your band off and let your skin recover fully if you have:
- A rash, blisters or broken skin
- Swelling or redness that doesn't improve after removing the band
- Irritation that keeps coming back, even after following the steps above
If your symptoms continue or get worse, speak to a healthcare professional.
