How to read the ranges

The standard clinical range for adult resting heart rate is 60 to 100 bpm, and that range applies across all adult age groups. What changes with age is where most people sit within it, and how high the 95th percentile threshold falls. The 95th percentile figure tells you the point above which only 5% of the healthy population sits. It is not a clinical alarm threshold, but it gives useful context for interpreting readings that fall above the standard 100 bpm ceiling.

How age affects resting heart rate

Resting heart rate tends to decline slightly with increasing age in healthy adults. Data from 66,788 participants measured by PPG showed the 95th percentile falls from 110 bpm in adults aged 18 to 44, to 100 bpm in those aged 45 to 59, and to 95 bpm in those aged 60 and over. The direction of this trend is consistent with other large population studies, though the size of the change per decade is modest.

How biological sex affects resting heart rate

In adults under 50, women tend to have a resting heart rate approximately 3 bpm higher than men of the same age. This difference reflects factors including heart size and autonomic regulation, and it is not associated with worse cardiovascular health. By age 50 the difference largely disappears. The typical seated resting heart rate across all adults aged 29 to 65 is approximately 67 bpm. Real-world PPG measurements, which capture heart rate across a broader range of daily states, tend to run somewhat higher.

Where these reference points come from

Three separate figures are worth keeping apart, because they answer different questions. The normal range, 60 to 100 bpm, is the established clinical standard for adults. The 95th percentile thresholds come from the Avram 2019 Health eHeart study, which measured 3.1 million PPG readings from 66,788 participants. The typical seated mean of about 67 bpm comes from the Gonzales 2023 Fenland Study, which measured 10,865 adults aged 29 to 65 under controlled seated conditions. One caveat matters more than the rest. Splitting the 95th percentile by sex for the 18 to 44 and 45 to 59 age groups is not something either study reports directly. Those figures would have to be estimated from the combined Avram values adjusted by the Gonzales sex differential, so they require verification by a medical reviewer before they are published as numbers.
